Marquette Parts Ways With Steve Wojciechowski

Like Archie Miller at Indiana and Richard Pitino at Minnesota (who landed on his feet at New Mexico) this move surprised few as Steve Wojciechowski is let go after seven seasons at Marquette University. A long-time Duke University assistant, Wojciechowski fell short of the bar set by predecessors Tom Crean and Buzz Williams. The basketball program only reached two of the six NCAA Tournaments held under Wojciechowski's watch after eight consecutive appearances from 2006-13. The program went 128-95 overall, but just 59-68 in Big East Conference play. The Golden Eagles started 23-4 in 2018-19 but slumped badly down the stretch and routed by 12th seeded Murray State in the tournament. This season the team had quality wins over North Carolina and Wisconsin, but finished 13-14 and ninth in the 11-team Big East. The bad end to the 2019 season was punctuated when prized in-state recruits Sam and Joey Hauser entered the NCAA transfer portal together. After high-scoring Markus Howard's graduation in 2020, Wojciechowski was left with a young team and a rebuild with an administration growing impatient. Wojciechowski has options, he could wind up coaching Indiana as Crean did - or return to the Duke program and possibly being in the mix to become Mike Krzyzewski's eventual successor.
