An embarrassing 41-25 defeat to the Houston Texans turns out to be the final straw in Matt Patricia's three-year tenure with the Detroit Lions. Both he and General Manager Bob Quinn were let go Saturday.
Patricia finishes his coaching tenure in Detroit with a 13-29-1 record, slowly losing his locker room along the way. For now, Patricia goes down as a Bill Belichick deciple - along with Josh McDaniels, Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel, who flamed out at a head coaching level (Mike Vrabel and Brian Flores exceptions so far).
As far as the GM is concerned, standing pat with good but not great QB Matthew Stafford appears a monumental mistake as Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert were both available with the third overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. The good news is the Lions should be able to grab one of the bumper crop of quarterbacks that will be available this coming April.
